Here’s How!

1) Measure your rooms Length (L) and Width (W), make sure you measure in feet and round up. Then multiply the two together.  Ex: 10′X12′=120 square feet

2) Now that you have your square footage, You can estimate the material.

Based on your wood selection and budget, your flooring could be $5.00 a square foot to $25.00 a square foot. Most wood flooring is in the $5-$7 range.  You can often find some discounted flooring also.

Take your square footage (120 square feet) and multiply that by your material cost ($5+)

***There are additional materials required based on your sub floor.  You will need a moisture barrier. If it is applied over concrete this is a latex/rubbery material that is smeared over the concrete.  If it is a wood/plywood sub floor, then it will be a foam that is rolled out on the floor.  You will also want to account for the glue to lay the floor.

Sub floor PreP and Install: $1.50-$2.00 a square foot.

Floor Glue: 1 tub approximately every 150 square feet at around $100 a bucket.

3) Estimate the trim.  You want to be sure you account for those finishing details.  Baseboards, cove molding, t-molding (for doorways), transitions, etc.

Baseboards: Approximately $2.50-$4.00+ a linear foot

If you have pets or kids, you definitely want to go with a hand-scraped or distressed wood.  It will hide marks, scratches and scuffs!

• Next you want to prepare a few estimates so that you can gather a clear picture of your costs associated with the flooring.  Estimating wood flooring can easily be done on your own and in your spare time!

Yes, picking paint can be a daunting task, but the good news is…It is just paint! True…True…It is not as easy as it looks.  You followed all the steps to picking out a paint color.  Went to the paint store, picked an array of swatches, brought them home, hung the colors on the wall, discussed with husband (who had no input), waited a few days, discussed with friends (all had a different opinion), now you are more confused, go back to the paint store, got those handy samples for about $7 a pop, painted those on the wall, waited a few days, observed, asked again, confused again, out of desperation you ask your 3 year old….then…days/weeks/months pass and it is was past a second thought and you don’t even want to open up that bag of worms again.

Lots of designers do color consulting.  It is generally a by the room fee or a by the hour fee if you want a few more details taken care of like re-arranging some items, accessorizing, etc.
