Choosing Wood Flooring

4 05 2010

If you are like I was, you can’t wait to get that carpet removed and move on to wood flooring.  If you are one of the lucky ones, you may find that you already have wood flooring underneath your carpet! YAY!  Even though it may look horrible now, you can refinish it and you would be amazed at the results.  If you are not one of the lucky ones, then you are in the market for wood flooring.  When selecting wood flooring, my advise is to begin browsing first.  Ask questions, gather literature.  Once you have a few selections, your next step is to think of your needs and functions.

  • Do you have pets? Kids? How durable do you need your flooring to be?

If you have pets or kids, you definitely want to go with a hand-scraped or distressed wood.  It will hide marks, scratches and scuffs!

  • What are the aesthetics of your home?  How do you want your home to feel?

If you are wanting a modern feel, then you would choose a wood flooring that is smooth and can even have a high gloss on it.

If you are wanting to influence a Tuscan, farm, french, country, or worldly theme then there are many distressed options out there.  You can even be green and install reclaimed wood flooring!

  • Next you want to prepare a few estimates so that you can gather a clear picture of your costs associated with the flooring.  Estimating wood flooring can easily be done on your own and in your spare time!

Here are some pictures of some unique inlays! Enjoy ~
